Tax term

Final tax

Tax treated as final for a transaction or income under a specific provision.

Characterised as final means the amount collected at source closes the tax question on that income and the return does not recompute it. That is a specific legal treatment attached to specific provisions, not a general description of withholding, and Pakistani payroll readers meet both kinds inside the same year. Two deductions of Rs 30,000, one adjustable and one final, produce different return entries even though the payslips look identical, and the difference is invisible unless the provision is written down. The mistakes come from convenience: assuming a salary deduction finishes the matter and skipping the return, or adding a final-tax receipt to income and paying twice on it. A third error is treating a final amount as automatically refundable. Read the provision your agent cites, ask for the certificate that names the treatment, and check the current list of final-tax provisions with FBR before building a return on it.

Check the legal meaning in context and against the relevant tax year.
