Tax term

NTN

National Tax Number used to identify a registered taxpayer.

Every FBR-facing form in Pakistan asks for a taxpayer identifier, and for an individual employee that identifier is normally the CNIC itself, registered and validated as the NTN rather than issued as a separate number. The same digits appear on the salary certificate and on the withholding certificate, which is how an employer record links back to your own IRIS profile. Two records that both carry your CNIC still answer different questions: whether a return exists for a tax year, and whether the name appears on the current active-taxpayer listing. Someone who filed the 2025-26 salary return by the 30 September baseline recorded on this site’s deadline page has a filing record; someone who only obtained an identifier has neither. The usual mistake is treating the number as proof of compliance and quoting an old screenshot to a bank or employer. Before a transaction or a filing, confirm the identifier, the tax year and the status through FBR’s own lookup, and ask whoever requests it which exact record they need.

Check the legal meaning in context and against the relevant tax year.
