Tax term

Non-resident taxpayer

A person who does not meet the applicable residence test.

Failing the residence test changes what happens to foreign earnings; it does not erase Pakistan-source income. Rent from a property in Lahore, profit on a Pakistani bank deposit, or a final settlement from a former employer is still dealt with under source rules, and much of it reaches FBR through an agent who deducts before paying you across the border. Suppose Rs 600,000 of Pakistani rent is received during the year that ended on 30 June 2026: it sits inside the Pakistan picture whether or not the recipient is listed anywhere. The mistaken assumption runs the other way, that an overseas salary letter or a residency certificate settles everything and no return is due. A double-taxation treaty can alter the result, but only on its own terms and with documents. Verify the source rules, the withholding treatment and any treaty position with FBR for the tax year concerned.

Check the legal meaning in context and against the relevant tax year.
