Tax term

Salary income

Income received from employment, as defined by tax law.

The head called salary is wider than the basic-pay line. In Pakistani payroll practice it normally carries allowances, perquisites, a performance bonus, arrears and sometimes employer-funded benefits, each with its own treatment, so two employees with identical basic pay can report different figures. One receives a documented reimbursement of an actual business expense while the other receives a fixed cash allowance, and the labels do not decide the outcome. A raise of Rs 10,000 a month looks like Rs 120,000 a year, and the schedule prices that addition at the marginal rate of the band it lands in rather than at one flat percentage. The commonest error is assuming anything called an allowance or a reimbursement sits outside salary; the governing rule and the supporting evidence decide. Ask payroll how each line is classified and on what legal basis anything is excluded, keep the annual salary certificate, and confirm the current year’s treatment with FBR.

Check the legal meaning in context and against the relevant tax year.
