Tax term

Tax exemption

Income or a person excluded from tax under a specific legal provision.

Under a named provision, an exemption removes a particular amount, person or receipt from tax, generally with conditions attached, and it is not the same as a belief that some category of pay is simply tax-free. Pakistani payslips list allowances whose names suggest relief, but the label is not the legal test. Put Rs 300,000 of allowance, paid as Rs 25,000 a month, on top of a salary of Rs 1,800,000 and the 2026-27 estimate moves from Rs 72,000 to Rs 105,000. If the amount is genuinely exempt the lower figure stands; if it is not, the higher one does, and that Rs 33,000 is what guessing costs in either direction. The habitual errors are treating a reimbursement as automatically exempt and copying a colleague’s arrangement. Ask payroll which provision supports an exclusion, keep the evidence behind it, and verify the current conditions with FBR.
