Tax term
Tax residency certificate
A certificate used to evidence tax residence for a defined period.
Issued to evidence that you were resident for a defined period, a residency certificate is a document salaried employees ask for when something crosses a border: an employer abroad, a foreign bank applying a treaty position, or a tenant withholding tax on rent. It speaks to residence and nothing else. It does not certify that a return was complete, that tax was paid, or that a rate applies. A certificate covering the year ended 30 June 2026 says nothing about whether the 2025-26 return was filed, and readers often expect the opposite. The related mistake is assuming the certificate changes the tax: the authority in the other country applies its own rule and any treaty article on its terms, and the claim still needs the underlying records. Ask the requesting party precisely what it needs the certificate for, then confirm validity period and process with FBR.
