Tax term

Income-tax return

A statutory statement of income, tax, credits, and other required information.

Reported for a named year, a return is the statutory statement in which income, tax, credits and the wealth position appear, and withholding is only one of its inputs. That distinction defeats a widespread belief among Pakistani salaried employees that tax deducted by payroll makes filing unnecessary. The document checklist on this site gathers what the process normally needs: CNIC and IRIS details, the employer salary certificate, payslips, withholding certificates, bank statements, and asset and liability figures at the start and close of the year. The deadline page records the baseline due date for individual and AOP income-tax returns as on or before 30 September, with extensions announced separately, so the date itself is a thing to re-check. Mistakes are choosing last year’s form, entering an annual figure in a monthly field, and treating the acknowledgement as a decision on every number. Confirm the applicable return, form and date with FBR before filing.

Check the legal meaning in context and against the relevant tax year.
