Tax term

Withholding certificate

A record of tax deducted or collected and reported against a taxpayer.

Built from the agent’s statement rather than from payslips, the credits in a return rest on a withholding certificate that records tax deducted and accounted for against your identifier. Three fields have to agree with your own records: the taxpayer identifier, the tax year, and the amount. Take a salaried 2026-27 case where twelve payslips average Rs 6,000 of income tax and total Rs 72,000. A certificate showing Rs 72,000 supports the estimate, one showing Rs 78,000 needs an explanation, and one showing Rs 6,000 signals a reporting problem rather than a small deduction. The usual mistakes are accepting a certificate with the wrong CNIC, keeping only a screenshot without a transaction reference, and claiming tax an employer deducted but never deposited. Request the official record early in the year, reconcile it month by month, and verify its status with FBR.

Check the legal meaning in context and against the relevant tax year.
