Tax term
Withholding agent
A person required by law to deduct or collect tax on specified payments.
Whoever the law makes responsible for taking tax before money moves is a withholding agent: your employer on salary, a bank on deposit profit, a dealer or registration authority on a transaction. Because the duty sits with the payer, the same amount of income can be handled differently depending on who pays it and under which provision, and the recipient rarely chooses. On salary the agent also carries the projection, estimating annual income, deducting month by month, and revising after a bonus, arrears or a pay revision, which is why one month’s figure can look wrong when nothing is wrong. Ask the agent which rule and rate it applied and request the certificate that names you, the amount and the tax year. The usual mistake is reconciling twelve payslips against a self-made estimate instead of against the agent’s annual statement. Verify the certificate totals and the current rules with FBR.
